Running Bull - Sioux

Running Bull

Running Bull - TaTankakinyanke- was born about 1825 in the Yankton Sioux Indian Tribe.  The Yankton Sioux Tribe was located in South Dakota at the time.   His wife was Pejutawin-Medicine Woman, born about 1858 in South Dakota. He had a daughter and her name was Minnie KiKteWin Running Bull born about 1882 in South Dakota. He had two sons, one ticaKdeWakuwa, born about 1884 in South Dakota, died about 1887 in South Dakota, and Hoksina, born 1888 in South Dakota, died about 1890 in South Dakota.

Minnie Running Bull, Running Bull's daughter,  married an immigrant from Syria named George Abdalla.

Running Bull may have been Struck by the Ree's son and he was one of the chiefs headmen.

One of the reasons not much is heard about him is that after 1890 (Struck by the Ree d. 1889) the government abolished the chief system. The divisions of Sioux attempted to acknowledge their leaders but the government refused to do so.
1892 – Sale of Reservation

Running Bull was one of the Yankton tribal members who approved the sale of reservation land in 1892.

Christian - Catholic

He was baptized by Father DeSmet.

  1. I find this article extremely interesting considering my great grandfather was Chief Running Bull, and that is not his picture.

    1. Thank you for your comment. Do you have a picture of Chief Running Bull so that I can replace this incorrect picture?

    2. Actually you were right this photo is correct, I apologize profusely. After thoroughly analyzing the photo, it appears to be correct. Again please forgive me, I am just very defensive of incorrect documentation about my great grandfather. I should instead thank you for providing clear and correct information about him.

    3. This picture is 100% Chief Running Bull. I have looked at this picture hanging in my Grandfather's living room my entire life. My Grandfather is also his Great-Grandson and his name is Loren Duke Abdalla. Chief Running Bull's father was "Zuyesa" and not Chief Struck by the Ree. They both signed the Peace Treaty in 1837, and Running bull signed in 1858. Zuyesa means "Warrior" in English. I wish I had a picture of him. Loren Duke Abdalla was known as "The Indian" in WWII and is now being recognized for his service, please look him up also. Thank You, Douglas Nykolaycuyk. Zuyesa's 4th Great Grandson.

  2. I appreciate so much your conversation. I'm a Native teacher in Washington State (Yakama), and I'm writing curriculum for Oregon. One of the parts is about "playing Indian." As descendants you might want to know that Wholesale Halloween Costumes is selling a "Running Bull" costume that is beyond offensive. Here's the link: http://www.wholesalehalloweencostumes.com/kids-costumes/boys-costumes/indians/CC00521-running-bull-child-costume.html
After I finish my curriculum I will write this company.

  5. I am one of the living family members of Chief Running Bull. He is my Great Great Grandfather. I had found this out because of my family members. My aunt currently has a picture of him when he was older and was wearing a suit in her house on her wall. I am guessing it was taken a while after the reservation was sold.

  6. Stand Like a Man; The Story of Duke "The Indian" is a book now available on Amazon. Loren Duke Abdalla is the Great Chief Running Bull's great-grandson. Duke is under review for The Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions as a Marine during WWII on May 5, 1945. You will find more information on Chief Running Bull and his father Zuyesa who signed a Peace Treaty in 1837 which ceded all the lands East of The Mississippi River to the United States, and Running Bull's Treaty with the U.S. later in 1858.

  7. July 4, 2015, The Yankton Sioux Tribe held a sacred ceremony Honoring Loren Duke Abdalla with a Red Eagle Feather for facing the enemy and having been seriously injured in The Battle of Peleliu Sept. 17, 1944, during WWII. He was also Honored with the name of his Great Grandfather Running Bull. "Tabdoka Iyankahan" Now there are 2 Great Men named Running Bull in the family.

My grandmother was Mercy Marie Pigsley. my email is debbastra@gmail.com

  14. Thank you all for posting this thread. I know this may sound crazy to some, but my ears began to ring as i saw his picture for the first time. a few days ago while in deep meditation, I was asking the universe for guidance and a voice pure of heart came to me and said his name was Running Bull. For a while i thought it was just my imagination making up names (not that that happens to me, but that I had never heard the name before). It seems that he wanted to give me advice and inspiration to create something wonderful for the world. the task is daunting and seems like it will take the effort of more than just myself. However I would be humbled to spend my life on this project, For it is much bigger than me. I hope to use his inspiration to help as many people as I can. I hope his spirit continues to guide mine. Peace and Love be with you All.

  16. Thank You for telling Duke "The Indian's" Story. I would appreciate if you wanted to tell anyone you like about a real National Treasure. Duke was just Honored as Veteran of the Day with the U.S. Veterans' Affairs and this is the link, but just a note on the article written, he was born in Greenwood, SD and raised in Wagner.
